She was born in Terceira, Portugal, the daughter of the late Jose DeBrito and Maria (Silva) DeBrito. Maria has resided in Taunton since 1975 and worked for Morton Hospital. Maria enjoyed shopping, cooking and above all cherished her time with her children and grandchildren. Maria leaves her loving children Alberto DeSousa Jr. of Taunton and Diana DeSousa and her fiancée John Monteiro of Dighton. Her grandchildren Jesse DeSousa, Dennis Monteiro and Mariah Monteiro all of Dighton. She is also survived by her siblings Eva DeBrito, Lucy DeBrito and Jose DeBrito. Joshua also leaves his former wife Megan (Pierce) Acerra and their son Jacoby both of Taunton. Joshua was a resident of Taunton all his life. He served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard. Joshua enjoyed boating and all water activities and football and baseball. Joshua also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. TAUNTON – John Barradas, husband of the late Wanda (Maciejowski) Barradas, passed away peacefully at his home October 22, 2015 after a brief illness at the age of 99. He was born in Taunton on April 30, 1916, son of the late Joaquin and Maria (Sylvia) Barradas, and brother to the late Alice (Barradas) Butler and the late Robert Barradas. As a lifelong Taunton resident, Mr. Barradas, also known as “Barradas the Artist”, was well known for his incredible art. He always had a drawing pad and pencil by his side. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He was the best story teller and everyone loved his jokes, even when he laughed before the end of the joke. He, along with his wife, owned and operated Barradas Signs from 1956 to 1978 and many of his signs are still throughout the city. In retirement he enjoyed painting all types of subjects, especially olde town Taunton. John received many awards over the years and was involved in many civic groups. He graduated cum laude from Taunton High School in 1935, after which he attended Rhode Island School of Design, where he graduated in 1941. He was a life member of the Lodge of Elks No. 150, a member of the Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus. He was a lifelong member of Holy Rosary Church and a member of the Polish American Citizens Club. He was also proud of his time on the advisory board of Bristol-Plymouth Regional High School. He was past president of the Taunton Art Association from 1985 to 1987, and Chairman of Taunton Municipal Airport in the 1980s. John also designed the Taunton Green Christmas displays in 1948, 1951, 1964, 1967 and 1989, which was the 75th anniversary Christmas display. He was the recipient of the Key to the City of Taunton on November 15, 1987 by Mayor Richard Johnson for appreciation of artistic contribution in designing the center motif for the Taunton Green Christmas display and community spirit. He was the building chairman for the Taunton Art Association addition, which was named the Barradas Gallery in his honor. It was in this gallery where John held his last art show at the age of 99. On this day, September 19, 2015, Mayor Hoye declared as John Barradas Day in the city of Taunton, in appreciation for all he has done for the city. John’s favorite question that day was, “Hey what day is it?” “It’s John Barradas Day!” John is survived by his daughters, Cheryl (Barradas) Dyson and Ava (Barradas) Nadeau; 5 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren, and his 4 legged little buddy, Otis. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends. His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Tuesday, Oct. 27th at 8 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at Holy Rosary Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. She was born 94 years ago in Taunton, the daughter of the late Euclid and Mathilda (Mador) Boivin. She was educated in Taunton, having graduated from the former St. Jacques Grammar School and St. Mary’s High School, and had been a lifelong city resident. Prior to her retirement, Rita had been employed as an inspector for Texas Instruments in Attleboro for 16 years. Following retirement, she was employed on a part time basis for CMS Components in Bridgewater for several years. She was previously employed at Chadmore’s, Ansonia Mills, and had assisted at her family’s former store. Rita was a “plane spotter” during World War II. She was a member of L’Union St. Jean Baptiste, Conseil No. 53, the St. Jude the Apostle Parish Womens Guild, and the former Friendly Senior Citizens Club. She also was active in several Mother’s Clubs during her childrens’ education, and was a member of the Mission Club and the Majorettes during her high school years. She enjoyed sewing, reading, traveling and spending time with her family. She was a communicant of St. Jude the Apostle Parish in Taunton. She leaves: 4 sons: Deacon Philip E. He was passionate about bodybuilding. He also modeled for Alfani and loved the piano and trumpet. He served in the U.S. Army as a PFC until his passing. She is also survived by one sister, Emily Ross; a niece and caregiver, Coreena Vargas; and several nieces and nephews. She was born in Taunton, Massachusetts and lived happily there for 88 years. During that time, she was a devoted communicant of Holy Rosary Church, helped every year with the “Polish Picnic”, worked as a sales manager for Pobers clothing store, danced at Roseland Ballroom, and did extensive traveling with her husband. In 2012 she moved to Florida and lived out the remainder of her years with her daughter in the Gainesville area. She was a parishioner of St. Philip Neri Church and was frequently visited by Fr. Bui and Deacon Prentice Cooper and Leonie Cooper. She loved her parish friends and the people she befriended in Hawthorne, FL. She will truly be missed. Calling hours will be held at the O’Keefe-Wade Funeral Home, 70 Washington Street in Taunton Friday November 27th from 5-7 PM. A graveside service will be held on Saturday at St Joseph Cemetery in Taunton at 11 AM.

Miss Marie T. Blain, of Taunton, died Friday, November 13 in Longmeadow of Taunton following a period of failing health. She was born 91 years ago in Taunton, the daughter of the late Noel and Celanese (Hanrahan) Blain. She was educated in Taunton, having graduated from Taunton High School, and was a lifelong city resident. Prior to her retirement, Marie was employed as a secretary for the V.A. Medical Center, Brockton for many years. She was previously employed at Reed and Barton Silversmiths. Marie enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles. She was a communicant of the former St. Jacques Parish in Taunton. She leaves: several nieces and nephews, including Louise Souza and Susan (Malloch) Taylor, both of East Taunton. A Memorial Mass to which relatives and friends are invited will be celebrated at St. Jude the Apostle Church, 249 Whittenton Street on Friday, December 11 at 9:00 A.M. TAUNTON – Peter Stevens, husband of Doris (Devolle) Stevens of Taunton, died at The Tremont in Wareham on Nov. 19, 2015. He was 86. Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late James and Pauline (Turtulli) Stevens. Peter was a Taunton High School graduate and Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. Employed for many years by Harold’s Automotive, he also had worked for Heritage Woodwrights, Inc. He retired in 2005. A passionate baseball enthusiast, Mr. Stevens coached the Western Little League Braves for decades. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, James Stevens of W. Wareham; a daughter, Debra Mancini of Assonet; 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held at the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Saturday, Nov. 28th at 3:30 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. The family will be receiving visitors between the hours of 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. prior to the Services.
