In Taunton, October 26, 2014 Edward Francis Lamarche, Age 72, passed away unexpectedly. Edward leaves his loving wife Dorothy A. (Jotka) Lamarche of Taunton. He was born in Taunton, the son of the late Hector & Julia (Dumont) Lamarche. Edward had resided in Taunton his entire life. He served his country during Vietnam in the U. S. Army. Edward worked for the former Foxboro Co. and Invensys Co. in Foxboro until his retirement, working as an electronics technician. Edward was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Church Choir and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed photography, walking and hiking, traveling, helping people and above all cherished his time with family. Edward leaves his two children Christina Marie Lamarche McMahon and her husband Kevin of East Taunton and Michael James Lamarche and his wife Emily of Alexandria, VA. Edward also leaves his grandchildren Briana Mullens, Kathleen McMahon and Julia McMahon. Edward is survived by his siblings Norma Lima of Dighton, Nancy Foster of Berkley and Maureen Marrotte of Taunton and was preceded in death by his brother Robert Lamarche. Funeral from the O’Keefe-Wade Funeral Home, 70 Washington St., Taunton, MA 02780 on Thursday, Oct. 30th at 9 am. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Jude the Apostle Church in Taunton at 10 am. Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours on Wednesday from 5-8 pm. TAUNTON – Floriano da Ponte, husband of Maria N. (Rapose) da Ponte of Taunton, died at Golden Living Oak Hill in Middleboro on Oct. 26, 2014. He was 87. Born in St. Michael, Azores, the son of the late Pedro and Sara (Moniz) da Ponte, Mr. da Ponte was educated in the Azores and served in the Portuguese Army, before moving to the Taunton area in 1967. Employed as a machine operator for the Bacon Felt Company, where he worked for over thirty years, he retired in 1997. He was a communicant of St. Andrew the Apostle Church. In addition to his wife, Mr. da Ponte leaves two daughters, Manuela da Ponte of Taunton and Bella Bettencourt and her husband Daniel, of Taunton; two grandchildren, Jason Bettencourt and his wife Michelle of Dighton, and Christopher Bettencourt of Taunton; three great grandchildren, Logan, Cole and Quinn Bettencourt; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. da Ponte was predeceased by his son-in-law, the late Michael Casados, and was also the brother of the late Pedro da Ponte and Gilda Cordeiro. His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Thursday, Oct. 30th at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Andrew the Apostle Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Mrs. Audrey A. (Lipes) Vieira, of East Taunton, died unexpectedly Tuesday, October 28 at her residence. She was the former wife of Lionel “Dan” Vieira. She was born 65 years ago in Montrose, Colorado, the daughter of the late James and Emmajean Lipes. She was educated in Colorado and had been a Taunton resident for 25 years. Audrey enjoyed playing games on her computer, reading, and spending time with her family and her cat, Holly. She took pride in her sobriety, which was achieved with the assistance of the Salvation Army. She leaves: 1 daughter: Bobbi-Jo Sherman and her husband, David of Taunton; 1 brother: James Lipes of Indiana; 2 sisters: Alice Pegg and her husband, Steve of Texas, and Amy Zoller and her husband, Bob of Texas; 2 grandchildren: Alexandra and Haley Sherman, and several nieces and nephews. TAUNTON – Francis J. Enos of Taunton died at the Brockton VA Medical Center on Oct. 26, 2014. He was 70 years old. Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late Francis and Anna (Ventura) Enos. Mr. Enos was a lifelong resident of Taunton and attended Taunton schools. A U.S. Marine Corps Veteran of the Vietnam War, he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat. Mr. Enos was employed as a patrolman by the Taunton Police Department for many years. In his spare time, he was an avid bicyclist and enjoyed spending spent with his family. Survivors include two daughters, Kerrie Carrelas and her husband Kevin, and Cheryl Enos, all of Taunton; a son, Francis J. Enos and his wife Jenni of Berkley; a brother, Richard Enos of Taunton; a sister, Margaret Martinez of NH; six grandchildren, Owen, Maddison, Kylie, Brady, Lucas and Mason; and several nieces and nephews. He was also brother of the late Gilbert and David Enos. TAUNTON – James “Jimmy” “Twinnie” Fontes, 80, of Taunton, passed away peacefully after a recent decline in health, on Oct. 27, 2014. Born in Taunton, he was the twin son of the late Manuel and Mary (Lopes) Fontes. For the past 40 years, James and his twin brother, John, worked side by side, offering the highest quality floor refinishing to both commercial and residential properties all around Massachusetts. James leaves his loving wife, Henrietta (Gonsalves) Fontes; daughter, Jodi A. Fontes-DeMattia, Jr.; sister, Margaret “Nina” Rose; and twin, John Fontes, all of Taunton; many, nieces, nephews, cousins and a great number of friends. He was predeceased by sisters, Alice Fontes and Mary Louise Montrond, and brother, Manuel “Sonny” Fontes. In Taunton, October 31, 2014 Ann Dooley, Age 90, passed away in Morton Hospital following a brief period of declining health. Ann is survived by her husband Thomas of Taunton. She was born in Taunton, the daughter of the late Edward & Alice (O’Donnell) Massey. Ann was a lifetime resident of Taunton and was employed for the City of Taunton public schools as a cafeteria worker. Ann enjoyed gardening and yard work, knitting and above all her time with family. In addition to her husband, Ann leaves her two daughters Ann Lavigne and her husband Eugene of Taunton and Patricia Dooley of Taunton. Ann also leaves her sister in law Agnes Massey of Somerset and was preceded in death by her siblings Edward Massey and Mary Massey. Ann also leaves her seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Ann also leaves several nieces and nephews. Edna Louise (Douglas) Vickey, born July 6, 1934 in Danvers, Mass. to Grace Esther (Trask) and William Douglas passed away today, November 4, 2014. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother George Douglas of Brockton and her sister Diane (Douglas) Gusicoria, also of Brockton. Edna was formerly from the North Shore and Brockton but had lived in East Taunton for the past 53 years. She was educated in Danvers, Ipswich, and Brockton. Edna was a housewife and devoted mother most of her life but when her youngest children attended high school Edna joined the work force as a waitress at Tane’s and Friendly’s. She moved on to work as a cashier at Stop and Shop where she retired in 2005. Edna was very active in PTA serving various offices of County Street School as well as Walker School. She enjoyed bowling and played with the women’s league at Raynham Bowl. She also liked to travel and had made many visits to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Reno, Lake Tahoe, and Bermuda. She was also an avid reader, liked to crochet and sew, and in the past few years received great pleasure from her small garden with its whimsical solar lights and many bird feeders. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, David Vickey, Sr. formerly of Stoughton and her 5 children: Denise Downey (Scott) Smith of Novato, California; Mary Lou Downey Prudhomme of East Taunton; Robin Vickey (Richard) Cardoza of Stoughton; David (Wendy) Vickey Jr. of Rehoboth; and Martin (Lisa) Vickey of East Taunton. She will be missed by her 10 grandchildren: Nikolai Smith of Granada Hills, California Erin Leigh, and Sarah Smith of Novato, California; Eric Cardoza of Foxboro and Michael Cardoza of Taunton; Elizabeth and Sara Vickey of Rehoboth; as well as Kirsten, Austin, and Allyson Vickey of East Taunton. Edna was very proud of her 8 great-grandchildren as well; Brooke Smith of Novato, California; Nicolas, Alyssa, Micah, Tyler, and Skylar Cardoza of Foxboro and Rylie Vickey of Rehoboth as well as Madeline Cardoza of Taunton. She will be greatly missed by her brothers Ron Douglas of Ft. Lauderdale., Florida, Fred Douglas of Brockton and her sister Barbara Wenson also of Brockton. A wake will be held at the Taunton Funeral Home, 8 Crapo Street, Taunton, Mass. on Thursday evening November 6th from 4-8pm to be followed by a funeral service Friday, November 7th at 11 am. Michael Souza Gomes a lifelong resident of Taunton passed away at his home in his sleep on November 3, 2014. He was 33 years old. Michael was the son of Manuel H. Gomes of Florida and Helen Souza of Taunton. He was the beloved brother of Manuel “Manny” Gomes and his wife Sandra of Taunton and Treysa Harris and her husband Andrew of Taunton. Michael was the proud uncle of Delaney Batista, Jamen Gomes and Jaxen Gomes. He was the grandson of Helena Souza of Taunton and will be missed by his aunts and uncles; Virginia and Charles P. Crocker, Jr., Jorge and Judy Matos, Arthur and Carmen Cabral and Fernando and Donna Gomes. Michael was also the loving cousin of Sandra Matos, Linda Matos, Nicholas Gomes, Eric Gomes, Desire Henriques, Charles P. Crocker III, Sonia Cabral and Jessica Cabral. Mr. Gomes was a dear friend to many. Born in Taunton on September 22, 1981, Michael will be remembered for his selfless nature. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking; which included a climb up Mount Washington. He loved to go camping and enjoyed being preferred being outside playing tennis and basketball. While indoors he was a talented video gamer as he conquered many games. Michael was an extremely hard worker who had much experience with construction in many aspects of the trade. He is also survived by his stepmother, Cecelia Reid of FL; a brother, David Reid, Jr. of KY; a sister, Susan Gould and her husband Kurt of NH; a nephew, Benjamin Gould; a niece, Nychole Reid; his beloved dog and traveling companion, Tunaka; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. TAUNTON – Anthony J. Burgess, husband of the late Agnes (Costa) Burgess, died at his Taunton home on Nov. 5, 2014. He was 90 years old. Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late John and Maria (Rodrigues) Burgess. A lifelong Taunton resident and 1942 graduate of Taunton High School, he served in the Army Air Corp during WWII with the 9th Air Corp, 354th Fighter Group as a crash crew member. He served in Scotland, France, England, Luxemburg and Germany during the war. Upon his discharge in 1945, he received five Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal, the Presidential Citation and the Soldiers Medal of heroism after rescuing a pilot from a burning plane. From 1946 to 1978, Tony owned and operated the Raynham Supermarket and was later employed by the State of Massachusetts as a dairy inspector for the Department of Agriculture. He retired in 1995. A charter member of the Raynham American Legion, he was instrumental in getting the Raynham Little Baseball League started. Tony enjoyed gardening, traveling, listening to music and most of all, spending time with his family. Survivors include three sons, Anthony J. Burgess and his wife Susan of Raynham, David A. Burgess and his wife Blanche of East Taunton and Richard C. Burgess of Taunton; three daughters, Marian F. Morgis and her husband Michael of Raynham, Amy L. King and her companion Peter Neufell of GA and Christine A. DePaula and her husband Lawrence of Taunton; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late John and George Burgess, Mary Costa and Elizabeth Medeiros. TAUNTON – Maria R. (Costa) Sousa, wife of the late Antonio J. Sousa, died at Taunton Nursing Home on Nov. 9, 2014. She was 90 years old. Born in St. Michael Azores, she was the daughter of the late John and Maria C. (Costa) Costa. She had lived in the Taunton area since 1967. A lifelong seamstress, Mrs. Sousa loved sewing, and in her younger days taught the craft to others. She was also employed by Texas Instruments for over twenty-six years. A communicant of St. Anthony Church, in later years Mrs. Sousa enjoyed crocheting. Survivors include three sons, Manuel J. Sousa, John N. Sousa and Antonio J. Sousa, all of Taunton; a daughter, Grace Chaves of Taunton; five sisters, Maria C. Travassos of North Reading, Mary L. Souza of Taunton, Eduarda Ventura and Teresa Areia, both of Ontario, Canada, and Ernestina Rebello of Bermuda; thirteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In Taunton, November 10, 2014 Robert A. Gray son of the late Arthur and Lucille (Holden) Gray Sr. died at Longmeadow of Taunton at the age of 71. Born and educated in Taunton, Robert was a longtime resident of Taunton. He was employed at Vinland Cold Storage in NJ then he moved back to Taunton and worked for FB Rogers Silver Co and later Crown Tank both in Taunton. Robert enjoyed fishing, hunting, animals and especially nature. He was the brother of Arthur E. Gray Jr and his wife Terri of SC, Malcolm H. Gray and his wife Patricia of Virginia, James L. Gray of Taunton, Jacquelyn L. Reid and her husband Richard of Taunton, David L. Gray Sr. and his wife Robin of FL, Paul W. Gray of NJ and the late Martin S. Gray. Uncle of many nieces and nephews. RAYNHAM – Edna P. (Welch) Parrett, wife of Ray Parrett of Raynham, died at Brockton Hospital on Nov. 7, 2014. She was 64. Born in Edenton, North Carolina, NC, she was the daughter of the late Nixon and Beaulah (Skinner) Welch. For many years Edna was employed as a claims adjuster for the Aetna Insurance Company in Brockton. She also owned and operated a small business dealing in artificial floral arrangements and party planning. For the past fourteen years, Edna battled kidney disease and became very involved in organizations founded to help those inflicted with kidney problems. In her spare time, she enjoyed jigsaw and crossword puzzles, and was an avid reader. In addition to her husband of forty-five years, Edna leaves three sons, Terry Parrett of Brockton, Raymond Parrett and his wife Jeannette of Brockton and Keith Parrett and his wife Tania of Taunton; a brother, Earl Roberts of Philadelphia; two sisters, Ruth Plowden and her husband Rod of Colorado and Roslyn Roberts of North Carolina: seven grandchildren, Victoria, Tinna, Talia, Leah, Raya, Kayla and Samantha; and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Mildred Thompson. Funeral services will be held at the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Saturday, Nov. 15th at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Pleasant Street Cemetery, Raynham. Mrs. Carol Louise (Conaty) DeBenedetti, 67, passed away on October 19, 2014 in Tustin, Calif. She was born on October 7, 1947 in Taunton, Mass., to Robert A. and Mary Eileen (Callahan) Conaty. Carol grew up in Taunton, graduating from Taunton High School in 1965. During her working life, Carol spent time at Taunton City Hall as Secretary to the Mayor. She also worked as a medical transcriptionist for Rosendo Oalican, PMD., Inc. until she retired in 2006. In retirement, Carol spent much of her time traveling to California and Vienna, Austria, to visit her daughters and grandchildren. Carol is survived by her loving partner, Albert Leal of Taunton; her daughters, Kara Price and her husband, Ryan of Corona, Calif., and Julie Zuer and her husband, Joseph of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a brother, Robert J. Conaty of Williamstown, Ma.; her sisters, Joan M. Adamczyk and her husband, Frank of Taunton, and Patricia A. Farrands and her husband, James of East Taunton; her grandchildren, Natalie and Matthew Price, and Madeline and Jonathan Zuer, and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Jude the Apostle Church, 249 Whittenton Street, Taunton, on Monday, November 24 at 11:00 A.M. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Born in Dighton, he was the son of the late Armando and Mary (Lopes) Vincent. Educated in Dighton, he later served in the US Army during WW II. A retired garage foreman, he was employed at the former Paul A. Dever School for over for thirty-one years. In his spare time, he enjoyed cooking. In addition his wife, he leaves two sons, Robert Vincent of Taunton and Stephen Vincent of East Taunton; a daughter, Patricia Pacheco of Taunton; three sisters, Laura Sequera of Plymouth, Madeline Avila of FL and Mary Rebello of North Dighton; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was also brother of the late James and Joseph Vincent, Celeste Fernandes and Rose Macedo. Funeral Services were held privately at the convenience of the family. TAUNTON – Joao C. “John” Freitas, husband of the late Maria Carmo (Freitas) Freitas, died at Morton Hospital on Nov. 21, 2014. He was 74. Born in Flores, Azores, John was the son of the late Joao M. and Maria (de Sousa Corvelo) de Freitas. A Taunton resident since 1979, he was employed as a machine operator by Dymo Plastics for over thirty years. A communicant of St. Anthony Church, John enjoyed cooking for his family and gardening. Survivors include a son, Johnny Freitas of Taunton; three daughters, Maria Elisio and her husband Joseph of Taunton, Connie Baker of Taunton and Lucilia Turner of Phoenix, AZ; six grandchildren, Sarah Burdon, Joseph Elisio, Ashley, Nicole, Amanda Fratus and Abiyah Turner; one great grandchild; six brothers; two sisters; and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by several brothers and sisters. His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Monday, Nov. 24th at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Anthony Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Evelyn A. “Evie” Rice was called home to our Lord on Friday, November 21, 2014. She was the daughter of the late John J. and Catherine (Casey) Rice and is survived by her beloved sister Mary C. Perry of Taunton. Evie loved and was loved by her two nieces, Martha (Rice) Furtado and her husband Dennis of Taunton, Anne (Perry) Bison and her husband Robert of Fall River, as well as by her two nephews James G. Perry of Yonkers, NY and Michael E. Rice and his wife Diana of Berkley. She leaves her sister-in-law Wilma Rice of Taunton. She was the sister of the late Edward M. Rice, John “Jack” Rice and the late sister-in-law of Gilbert Perry. She took great joy in her grand nieces and nephews. Evie was also the lifelong friend of Madeline Brady and Frances Guay. Evelyn was a graduate of St Mary’s grammar and High School in Taunton. She received her Bachelor’s degree in English from Stone Hill College and masters in English from Boston College and was a member of Delta Gamma Kappa. Her entire teaching career of thirty four years was at Dighton Rehoboth High School. She was the first recipient of the prestigious Mustard Seed Award Foundation Award for outstanding teaching. Evelyn loved her career, students- an inspiration to so many. At DR Evelyn served as chair person of the Respect for Fellow Man Committee. She also advocated feverishly for Right to Life. In addition she loved her volunteer driving for American Cancer Society. She was a frequent visitor to the MFA in Boston to Broadway shows and the cinema. Her favorite activity was travelling. Evelyn was a devoted communicant of St Mary’s Church in Taunton. Funeral from the O’Keefe-Wade Funeral Home, 70 Washington Street in Taunton Monday November 24th at 10:30 AM. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St Mary’s Church in Taunton at 11:30 AM. Calling hours will be at the Funeral home on Sunday from 4-7 PM. Interment St Francis Cemetery in Taunton. TAUNTON – Edward F. Aleixo, devoted husband of sixty-three years to Lillian (Vieira) Aleixo, died at his Taunton home surrounded by his loving family on Nov. 16, 2014. He was 89. Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late Francisco and Mary G. (Semas) Aleixo. A graduate of Stonehill College, he earned his master’s degree from Bridgewater State University. Ed was an educator for most of his life having taught in the Dighton and Taunton School systems. He was a former headmaster of Taunton High School and past Superintendent of Taunton Public Schools. He also taught at the US Army War College. An Army Veteran of WW II, he attained the rank of Colonel in the USAR. A retired Director of Surplus Properties of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Ed served on various boards of trustees including Morton Hospital & Medical Center and the Taunton Public Library. He was a communicant of St. Andrew the Apostle Church and P.E.R. of the Taunton Elks Lodge 150. In addition to his wife, he leaves three daughters, Susan Kelly and her husband Neil, Cheryl Bonaparte and her husband Francis, and Rosemary Caras and her husband Nicholas; seven grandchildren that he cherished, Patrick and his wife Meredith, Sarah and Elizabeth Kelly, Amy Smith and her husband Dan, Ian Bonaparte, and Courtney and Alexandra Caras; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Albert, Theodore “Jeff”, James, and Edmund “Sam” Aleixo, Blanche Francis, Angela Lallier, Elsie Crowder and Ida Vass. Funeral services were held privately. TAUNTON – Elsie (Semas) Abreau, wife of the late Joseph Abreau, died at her Taunton home on Nov. 28, 2014. She was 96. Born in Taunton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Souza) Semas. She attended Taunton schools including Taunton High School. Elsie held the position of treasurer for the Abreau Trucking Company for over twenty-five years, retiring in 1980. A communicant of St. Anthony Church, she taught CCD classes and was past president of the St. Anthony Holy Rosary Sodality. She was a recipient of the Margaret M. Lahey Memorial Award and the Marian Medal Award; and was a member of the Professional Women’s Club and the Old Colony Historical Society. Survivors include two daughters, Joyce E. Wallace of Raynham and Cynthia M. Abreau of Taunton; three grandchildren, Jack Wallace, Mary Lynn Nunes and Jennifer Nickiloulias; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was also sister of the late Edmund Semas, Mary Semas, Laura Pinto and Dulinda Prosky. Her funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Monday, Dec. 1st at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Anthony Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
