In Boston, June 25, 2014 Manuel De Jesus, Age 74, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness in Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Manuel is survived by his loving wife Lidia (Rodrigues) De Jesus of Taunton. He was born in Madeira, Portugal, the son of the late Manuel Pires and Filomena (Freitas) De Jesus. Manuel emigrated to the United States with his wife and daughters on February 24th , 1973. He lived in Taunton ever since. Manuel was employed through Leach & Garner Co. in Attleboro from 1973 until his retirement. He loved working on his backyard farm and sharing his vegetables with others. He was happiest when traveling his beloved Madeira and especially enjoyed Madeira at Christmas time. He loved how Funchal lights up for Christmas and the world famous fireworks display for New Years Eve. In addition to his loving wife, Manuel leaves his two daughters Maria Odete Costa and her husband Nemesio and Galdina “Dina” Medeiros and her husband Sean. Manuel was a grandfather to Brianna Medeiros, Savannah Costa, Evan Medeiros and Ethan Costa. He was brother to Jose DeJesus and his wife Maria Jose from Taunton, Cristina Cimolina and her husband Angelo of Munich, Germany, Katarina Abreu and her husband Jose from Caracas, Venezuela, Jorge DeJesus and his wife Amelia from Funchal, Madeira, Joao DeJesus and his wife Teresa also from Funchal, Portugal and Teresa Tavares from Lisban, Portugal. He leaves many nieces and nephews with his niece Cristina Da Costa being his favorite. Arrangements are under the direction of the O’Keefe-Wade Funeral Home in Taunton. At Manuel’s request, funeral services are private and calling hours are kindly omitted.

TAUNTON – Irene (Costa) Rocha, lifelong area resident, died peacefully at her Taunton home on June 26, 2014. She was 85. Born in Taunton, she was the daughter of the late Marion and Mary (Furtado) Costa. Educated in Taunton schools, Mrs. Rocha was a 1947 graduate of Taunton High School. Employed by Western Auto for many years, she later worked in sales and customer service for Reed and Barton Silversmiths. She retired many years ago. A communicant of St. Anthony Church, Irene enjoyed reading and spending time with her family. Survivors include two sons, David F. Rocha and his wife Robin of Raynham, and Robert M. Rocha of Taunton; two grandchildren, Andrew D. Rocha of Raynham and Lauren Rocha of Boston; her sisters-in-law, Diane Smith and Claire Costa, both of Taunton; brother-in-law, Anthony Burgess of Taunton; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was also the sister of the late Manuel, Alfred, Louis and Anibal Costa, and the late Agnes Burgess. Her funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Monday, June 30th at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Anthony Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. In Taunton, June 24, 2014 Americo DeSousa husband of Ines(Lourenco) DeSousa for over 65 years died at Morton Hospital in Taunton at the age of 88. Born in Flores, Azores, Americo moved to Taunton in 1972 and was the son of the late Andre and Isabel (Mendonca) Trindade. He enjoyed gardening. fishing, soccer and spending time with family and especially enjoyed his son’s dog, Godiva. Americo was the father of Maria DeBarros and her husband Vasco of Taunton, Jose Olavo DeSousa and his wife Jean of Taunton, Jose Antonio DeSousa and his wife Diane of Berkley, Jose Alberto DeSousa and his wife Christine of Fall River and the late Jose Octavio Sousa. Grandfather of Octavio Sousa of Taunton, Ana Faria and her husband Albert of Taunton, Nelson DeBarros of Manchester, CT, Isabelle DeBarros of Taunton, Angela DeBarros of Dorchester, Stacey Maciel and her husband Ryan of Chestnut Hill, Jake DeSousa of Berkley and Kristyn DeSousa of Berkley. Great Grandfather of Colby Sousa of Taunton. Brother of Andrea Avelar of Taunton and the late Roque DeSousa and Maria Avelar. TAUNTON – Anna L. (Morrissey) Parkinson, wife of the late Raymond T. Parkinson, died at Longmeadow of Taunton on June 21, 2014. She was 91. Born in Providence, RI, she was the daughter of the late Alfred J. and Catherine C. (McCaughey) Morrissey. Mrs. Parkinson was raised and educated in Taunton and was a 1940 graduate of St. Mary’s High School. A retired senior clerk, she was employed by the City of Taunton Veterans Services. A former member of the Taunton Women’s Club and Red Hat Society, Anna was an active volunteer, serving at Golden Living Wedgemere Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Walker School and Citizens for Citizens. Survivors include a son, Bruce E. Parkinson and his wife Mary of North Falmouth; a sister, Helena Nickolds of GA; four grandchildren, John B. Powers of Blackstone, MA, Michael R. Powers of WI, Mark Parkinson of Littleton, MA, and Scott Parkinson of Taunton; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Carol A. Powers, and sister of the late Donald, Alfred, and Doris Morrissey. Services are being held privately at the convenience of the family. Mr. Peter Francis Kay, of Taunton and formerly of Hyde Park, died Friday, July 4 in Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He was born 66 years ago in Boston, the son of the late Harry J. and Irene (Kelley) Kay. He was educated in Hyde Park, having graduated from Hyde Park High School, and had been a Taunton resident for the past 15 years. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in South Boston for 30 years. Peter was previously employed at the Tileston & Hollingsworth Paper Mill in Hyde Park. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam Era. He was a former member of the Fogg-Roberts Post #78 American Legion in Hyde Park. He leaves: 2 sisters: Julie K. Coakley and her husband, Paul of Taunton, and Nancy J. Murphy of Wareham; his nieces: Kelley (Crockett) Nunes and her children, Brianna and Courtney of Raynham, Heidi Black and her children, Matthew Peter and Madison Kay of Taunton, Alicia Crockett of Taunton, and Victoria Crockett of Wareham; his nephew: Sean E. Gloria L. Fisher age 72 of Brockton died Thursday July 3, 2014 at the McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich after a lengthy illness. She was born and raised in Taunton, a daughter of the late Clement and Louise (Loud) Fisher. Her father died when she was very young and she was then raised by her mother and step-father Arthur Williams. For the past 10 years Gloria had been a resident of Brockton living at the Belair Street High Rise. Gloria had been a waitress for many years in local restaurants and 10 years ago retired from the Avon Town House. She loved to shop, attend auctions and visit flea markets, always in search of a bargain. She lived her life for her son Michael whom she loved dearly. Gloria was the mother of Michael W. Wade of New Bedford and the late Richard Scott Wade and Barry Lee Wade and grandmother of Ericka Derouen. She was the sister of Jay Fisher of Wareham, Arthur Williams of Brockton, Joyce Holbrook of Stoughton and the late Jean Brady. Gloria’s Funeral Service will be celebrated in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte. 123) Brockton on Wednesday at 11 am preceded with visitation 10-11 am. Burial in Central Cemetery, East Bridgewater.

Miss Lillian F. Bannon, of Taunton, died Tuesday, July 8 in Longmeadow of Taunton following a period of failing health. She was born 92 years ago in Taunton, the daughter of the late Timothy and Marie (Tremblay) Bannon. She was educated in Taunton, having graduated from the former St. Mary’s High School. Lillian continued her education at St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Providence, R.I., and received Masters Degrees from both Boston College and Assumption College in Worcester. Lillian resided in the Fitchburg area for many years before returning to Taunton upon her retirement 25 years ago. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed as a Professor at Fitchburg State College for 35 years. She was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a First Lieutenant with the 388th Station Hospital in Germany during the latter part of World War II. Lillian was a member of the American Nurses Association and the National League of Nursing. She enjoyed listening to radio, was an avid reader, donated to many veteran’s causes and, for a time, was a Hospice volunteer. She was a communicant of St. Jude the Apostle Parish in Taunton. She leaves: 2 nieces: Diane Soares and her husband, Alfred of East Taunton, and Elizabeth Blackwell and her husband, Jim of Foxboro, and several grandnieces and grandnephews. Lillian was also the sister of the late Helen B. Renaud, Norman Bannon and Norma Bannon, all of Taunton. Funeral services will be held from The Riendeau-Mulvey Funeral Home, 467 Bay Street, on Friday, July 11 at 9:30 A.M. Mary enjoyed knitting, crossword puzzles, painting and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her family. Taunton – Pauline U. Lewis, 88, of Taunton, died Monday morning July 7, 2014 at Morton Hospital after a short illness. Born January 25, 1926 in Taunton, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Katherine Petecki. Pauline was a life long resident of this city and was educated in the Taunton Public Schools. She was a graduate of the Brockton Academy of Beauty Culture and the Clairol Institute of Haircoloring. For many years she was employed as a beautician in area salons. Pauline was also employed by the Metals and Controls Corporation in Attleboro, Robertson Curtain Company, the Taunton Inn, Roseland Ballroom and Reed and Barton all of Taunton. While employed at Reed and Barton during World War Two, Pauline was awarded the Army-Navy “E” Production Award for excellence in War Production. Having a flair for the arts, Pauline was an avid painter and also enjoyed crochet, needlepoint and knitting. She consistently won numerous First and Second place awards at the Brockton and Rehoboth Fairs for her original paintings, needlework, afghans and handmade articles of clothing. She was a member of the Polish National Alliance Lodge 1054 and a communicant of Saint Mary’s Church Taunton. Besides her parents, Pauline was predeceased by her husband Edward C. Lewis in 1979 and her sister Florence Johnson in 2012. She is survived by her brother Ted Petecki, nephews Brett Johnson, Drew Johnson and niece Joni Kolakowski. Mr. Levesque was a custodian for the Taunton Public School Dept. for many years, worked as a sexton for the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Taunton for 16 years and was a bartender at various bars in the area. He enjoyed gardening, camping, cooking, animals and motorcycles. Along with his wife, Richard is survived by 4 daughters: Christine and husband Michael Fontaine of Fall River, Robin and husband Curt Haberbosch of Richmond, VA, Michelle Levesque of Swansea and Danielle Levesque of Taunton, a son: Richard J. Levesque, Jr. and fiancée Susan of Swansea, 4 step-children: Christine and husband Brian Marvel of Taunton, John Correia, Jr. of Taunton, Arthur Correia of Rehoboth and Melissa Rannacher of Naples, FL, a brother: Jean E. Born in Taunton, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Gladys(Haskins) Remillard. She was a lifelong resident of Taunton, and graduated from Taunton High School in 1939. A retired welder, Mrs. Florence was employed by Texas Instruments for thirty-two years before retiring many years ago. She enjoyed traveling and vacationing on Cape Cod. Survivors include two daughters, Jannis DeBrito and her husband Avelino of Wheatland, CA. and Karen Marotte of Taunton; a sister, Shirley Alexander of Raynham; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two great – great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Stanley M. Remillard, and the grandmother of the late Erik DeBrito. TAUNTON – Alice B. (Batista) Sousa of Taunton died at Morton Hospital on July 16, 2014. She was 85. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Joaquim and Honorato (Ramos) Batista Coelho. She resided in St. Michael, Azores for a time before moving to Taunton in 1969. She was a communicant of St. Anthony Church. Mrs. Sousa loved flowers and plants and enjoyed gardening. Survivors include four daughters, Mary I. Reaves and her husband Matthew, Maria DeSousa, Sara DeSousa and Anapaula DeSousa all of Taunton; fourteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Carlos Sousa, Jose DeSousa and Mary Jo Canales, and sister of the late John Coelho. Her funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Saturday July 19th at 8 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Anthony Church at 9 a.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. TAUNTON – Jose E. Santos, husband of Angela Cornier of Taunton, died at Morton Hospital on July 13, 2014. He was 63. Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Efrain Santos and Gloria M. Perez. A Taunton resident since 1997, he lived most of his life in Chicago, and was employed by Chicago Gear Works for many years. Mr. Santos enjoyed being with his family and spending time with them. In addition to his wife, he leaves four sons, Jose E. Santos of TX, Efrain Santos of Taunton, SSG Omy J. Santos of GA, and Sgt. Pedro E. Santos of PA; six daughters, Caroline Santos and Angela Prieto, both of Taunton, Nannette Santos of Chicago, Marilyn Santos of New Bedford, Omayda Santos of Raynham and Clyo Santos of Taunton; five brothers; four sisters; sixteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Friday July 18th at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Mary’s Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Robert Lopes, husband of Jo-Ann A. Gonsalves Lopes, died at Morton Hospital on July 15, 2014. He was 77. Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late John and Mary (Motta) Lopes. A lifelong Taunton resident, he attended Taunton schools and later served in the Army during the Vietnam War. A retired custodian, he was employed for many years by Bristol County Agricultural High School. He had previously worked for the Mount Vernon Silver Co. of Attleboro. A communicant of St. Anthony Church, Mr. Lopes enjoyed fishing and spending time at Pop’s Garage, socializing with friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. In addition to his wife, he leaves two brothers, John Lopes, Jr. of Taunton, and Ronald A. Lopes of Raynham; a sister, Donna Lopes Bell of Las Vegas; three grandchildren, Krystal Lopes, and Amanda and Alyssa Malendes; four great grandchildren, Keyon Council, Keyon-Dre Council, Keyoshja Council and Tanaisha Bates; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Robert and Robin Ann Lopes, and the brother of the late Jeanette Barboza. His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Monday, July 21st at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Anthony Church at 11 a.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling Hours will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, July 20th from 4 to 7 p.m.
