TAUNTON – Wilfred F. “Bill” Benoit, husband of the late Evelyn May (Ventura) Benoit, died peacefully at his Taunton home on July 9, 2012.
He was 86.
Born, raised and educated in Taunton, he was the son of the late Amedee and Louis (Paquin) Benoit.
A US Navy Veteran of WW II, he served aboard the Destroyer Escort U.S.S. H.R. Kenyon 683.
He obtained the rank of Radar Man, 2nd Class.
Assigned to duty in the North Atlantic Convoy in the Pacific Ocean, he received the WW II Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, (2 Battle Stars), and Philippine Liberation Medal.
Mr. Benoit was a Taunton firefighter for twenty-five years, retiring in 1972, and was the owner of the former Benoit Real Estate and Taunton Beverage and Liquors.
A communicant of St. Anthony Church, he was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge150, the International Association of Firefighters, the Firemen’s Mutual Relief Association of Taunton, and the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association of MA.
He was an active member of the AARP, the Senior Veterans Club of Taunton, and the Bristol County Savings Bank Prime Time Club.
Survivors include a son, Bruce A. Benoit and his wife Lida of Raynham; a daughter, Gina M. Hyde and her husband Mark of Taunton; his longtime companion Evelyn Vargas of Taunton; two sisters, Alice Scott of Taunton, and Annette Fonseca of CO; four grandchildren, Gregory and Amanda Benoit of Raynham, and Eric and Glenn Hyde of Taunton; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also the brother of the late Albert and Henry Benoit, and Ida Vigneault.
His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway Taunton on Saturday, July 14th at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Anthony Church at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
