TAUNTON – Cecelia M. (Arruda) Woods, wife of the late Harold E. Woods, died at the Life Care Center of Raynham on April 16, 2013. She was 96. Born in Taunton, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Maria (Cabral) Arruda. Raised and educated in Taunton, she was a 1935 graduate of Taunton High School. Mrs. Woods was employed by the former Children’s Shop for many years, and later worked for Hercules Manufacturing, retiring in 1971. She was a communicant of the former Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Survivors include a son, Harold E. Woods of Buzzards Bay; a daughter, Donna Gastaldo of San Juan, Puerto Rico; 4 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and 19 nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Joseph and Louis Arruda, Mary Crawley, Alveda DiFiore, Constance Borge, Rose Pedro and Louise O’Keefe. Her funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Saturday, April 20th at 9:00 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at Annunciation of the Lord Church at 10:00 a.m. She will be interred with her husband at the Massachusetts National VA Cemetery in Bourne on Monday, April 22nd at 2:30 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. In Brockton of Taunton, April 14, 2013 Joshua P. Hicks Sr. husband of Rashelle Lynn Hicks died at Good Samaritan Medical Center of the age of 71. Born and educated in Rehoboth, Joshua was the son of the late Joshua and Eleanor Hicks. Joshua was a self employed truck driver and was the former owner of Hicks Farm Supplies in Taunton. He enjoyed riding horses and playing Polo. He was the father of Joshua P. Hicks Jr of Taunton, James R. Hicks and his wife Katherine of Middleboro and Daniel P. Hicks of Taunton. Grandfather of Samantha Marie Hicks of Middleboro. A graveside service will be held at Steven’s Corner Cemetery, Anawan Street in Rehoboth Monday April 22nd at 1:30 PM.

In Taunton, April 17, 2013 Mary Michaud died at Morton Hospital after a long battle with cancer at the age of 80. She was the loving and devoted mother of Christine her fiance Stephen Benjamin of Taunton, William his wife Theresa of Brockton, Joseph of Taunton and the late Paul W. Michaud. Mary dedicated her life to children providing day care services for over 40 years. She touched the hearts and lives of many. Mary enjoyed spring time, summers on Cape Cod and the beaches. Calling hours will be held at the O’Keefe-Wade Funeral Home, 70 Washington Street in Taunton Sunday, April 21st from 1-4:30 pm with a service of remembrance at 4:30 PM. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. A celebration of life will be held at the Chateau Restaurant on Bay Street in Norton on Tuesday April 30th from 5-9 pm. Mr. Joseph T. Thomas, of Taunton, died Friday, April 19 in Morton Hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Taunton, the son of the late Tadrose and Rose (Khalil) Thomas. He was educated in Taunton and Fall River, and had been a city resident for most of his life. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by the City of Taunton Street Department for many years. Joseph was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, and also served as a Medic in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was a communicant of St. Jude the Apostle Parish in Taunton. He leaves: 1 sister: Sr. Jeannette Mary Thomas, R.S.M. of Bristol, R.I., and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was the brother of the late John “Yogi” Thomas, Rosalie Thomas, Mary Sarkes and Anne Sarkes. Funeral services will be held from The Riendeau-Mulvey Funeral Home, 467 Bay Street, on Tuesday, April 23 at 9:00 A.M. Mrs. Shirley (DeMoura) Correia, of Assonet, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 18 at her residence. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert M. Correia, Sr. She was born 73 years ago in Connecticut, the daughter of the late Alfred and Annette (Marquis) DeMoura. She was educated in Taunton and had been an Assonet resident for the past 48 years. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed at the Nulco Lighting Company in Attleboro for 10 years. Shirley enjoyed cooking, gardening, visiting casinos and spending time with her family. She leaves: 3 sons: Ronald Burgess of Minnesota, Robert M. Correia, Jr. and Thomas J. Correia, both of Assonet; 2 daughters: Cynthia Arsenault of Westport and Virginia A. Sylvia of Assonet; 2 brothers: Paul DeMoura of Dighton, and Robert DeMoura of So. Department of Transitional Assistance in Taunton. Mary enjoyed gardening, crafts, and spending time with her family. She was a communicant of the Holy Rosary Church in Taunton. TAUNTON – Jean Sauveur Philippe of Taunton died at Morton Hospital & Medical Center on April 20, 2013. He was 82. Born, raised and educated in Haiti, he was a veteran of the Haitian Army. He owned and operated a jewelry and watch repair shop in Haiti before moving to the Taunton area in 1976. The son of the late Jean and Caristi (Brutus) Philippe, Mr. Phillipe was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church. Survivors include his wife, Marie (Michel) Philippe; two sons, G. F. Philippe and Sage Philippe; a daughter, Judith Philippe; and a sister, Janet Philippe. In Taunton — Robert T. (“Jake” or “Bob”) Murphy of 42 Kilton Street, beloved father and grandfather, died on April 28, 2013 at the Belmont Manor Nursing Home in Belmont, Massachusetts. He was 86 years old. A Taunton native and lifelong resident, Mr. Murphy was the son of the late George B. and Mary C. Scanlon Murphy and brother of the late George E. Murphy. He was valedictorian of the class of 1944 of Monsignor James Coyle High School. In World War II he was a driver with the 79th Amphibian Tractor Company; after the war, Mr. Murphy went to Boston College on the G.I. Bill and graduated with honors with the class of 1950. He went on to receive his Master’s degree from Bridgewater State College. Mr. Murphy was appointed as a teacher in 1953 at Hopewell School and thereafter served at Maxham, Walker, Cohannet, and Leonard schools. At Leonard, he served as eighth-grade teacher and Assistant Principal, a position he filled afterwards at Mulcahey School. There he succeeded the late Charles McManus as Principal before retiring in 1985. He loved cultivating flowers in his garden, writing and illustrating letters to his daughters, and smoking his English Corona cigars. He was a truly devoted fan of Boston sports. A dedicated golfer, Mr. Murphy was a longtime member of the Segregansett Country Club. Mr. Murphy is survived by two daughters: Meredith Murphy of Watertown, Massachusetts and Janna Murphy Schmidt of Dublin, California. He is also survived by two young grandchildren, Noelle and Kai Schmidt. Services will be held at the O’Keefe-Wade Funeral Home, 70 Washington Street, in Taunton on Tuesday, April 30 day at 11AM. Calling hours will be from 10 to 11AM. Interment will be at the St. Francis Cemetery in Taunton. Mr. John E. “Jackie” Davis, of Taunton, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 9 at his residence. He was born 66 years ago, the son of the late Edmund F. and Edith (Regan) Davis. He was educated in Taunton and had been a city resident for most of his life. He was formerly employed as a mutual clerk at the Raynham-Taunton Dog Track for a number of years. Jackie was an accomplished and well-known area golfer. He won the Taunton City Open Championship in 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1973, as well as several club championships at Segregansett Country Club over the years. He enjoyed playing golf and socializing with his many friends. He leaves a niece, Mikala Cerney, and a nephew, Matthew Cerney, both of New Hampshire. Jackie was also the brother of the late Ellen Cerney of Taunton, and the nephew of the late Dr. John Regan of Taunton. Alvin G. “Sgt Souza” Souza, Sr., husband of Lucille (DeMello) Souza, died at home on April 28, 2013. He was 85. Born, raised and educated in New Bedford, he served in the United States Marines during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was employed as a supervisor for security for the former Paul A. Dever State School before retiring many years ago. A communicant of Holy Family Church, Mr. Souza was a 4th degree Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He founded and commanded the Young Marines of Taunton and New Bedford for 22 years. He was also a member of the VFW Post 611, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 57, and the Marine Corp League of Somerset, the Korean War Veterans and the American Legion Hall of Boston. He was also a recipient of the Marian Medal. Besides his wife Lucille, he leaves his son Alvin G.Souza,Jr. and his wife Pamela of Taunton, one daughter, Brenda Molden and her husband Robert of Taunton; Two brothers’, Joseph Souza of Florida and George Souza of Acushnet; One sister, Evelyn Martin of New Bedford; several nieces. He was also the father of the late Bruce Souza, and the brother of the late Frank Souza, Manuel Souza, and Hilda Silvia. In Taunton, April 30, 2013 Florence A. Murphy, age 96, passed away following a short illness. She was the wife of the late Edward J. Murphy. She was born in North Dartmouth, MA, the daughter of the late Frederick P. and Sara (Couture) Beique. She was raised and educated in Freetown and New Bedford. She was predeceased by her brothers, Frederick and Norman Beique, and sisters, Denise LaCroix and Christina Cornell Voye. Florence worked for many years at the former Coppercraft Guild Company in Taunton. One of her greatest joys in the life was sharing time with her family, and she enjoyed the company of many friends. She was affectionately called Nana not only by her grandchildren but all the children she met. In years past, when her vision was better, she was an avid reader, reading as many as eight books a month. Mrs. Murphy is survived by her three children, Dorothy A. Lane and her husband Joseph of Taunton, Robert P. Murphy and his wife Suzanne of Taunton and James P. Murphy and his wife Renee of FL. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Christopher J. Lane of New York, Laurie A. Kalivas of Brockton, Allison Hannah of Taunton, Andrew Murphy of Taunton, Sean Murphy of Georgia and Brandy Murphy Bonaventura of Georgia, Zachary and Stephanie Kalivas of Brockton, Miles, Mia and Ellie Grace Hannah of Taunton, and Aiden Murphy of Georgia. In Taunton, April 30, 2013 Thomas Brady, age 74 passed away in Wedgemere Nursing Home following a lengthy illness. Thomas is survived by his wife Donna (Frates) Brady of Taunton. He was born in Taunton, the son of the late Leo & Theresa (Barry) Brady. Thomas has been a lifetime resident of Taunton. He was employed by the former Retail Printing Co. as a stacker for over 25 years. Thomas enjoyed bingo, the dog track, Notre Dame Football, listening to Rock & Roll oldies. He was a former stock car racer, above all he loved spending time with family, and will miss his dog Candy. Thomas leaves his children, Donna McIntyre & husband Scott, Pauline Sheehan & husband Matthew, Robert Watts, Brian Watts & his wife Jovita, Jessica Brady and the late Bonnie Tavares. His grandchildren Latricca, Alice, Kevin, Kaitlyn, Shania, Teddy, Camilla, Amya, Samuel, Evan and Jessica. His great grandchildren Jonathan, Logan and Zeesha. He leaves his brothers James Brady and his wife Nancy and Robert Brady and his wife Joan, his late brother Paul Brady and was preceded in death by his other five siblings. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 6th at 10 am. in St. Mary’s Church in Taunton. Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours on Sunday from 3-5 pm. In Burlington, April 30, 2013 John J. LePage Jr., age 52 passed away at Lahey Clinic following a lengthy illness. He was born in Brockton, the son of Patricia (Cosgrove) LePage and his late father John LePage Sr. John has resided in Taunton the past 20 years and was formerly of West Bridgewater. He served his country in the U.S. Army. John was employed until his health would allow as a chef, working at the former LePage’s Steakhouse in Easton and an auto mechanic. He enjoyed playing guitar, motorcycles, cooking, collecting coins, military history, computer repairs and his family. John leaves his daughter Corinne LePage of Taunton. His sisters Michelle Maher of Rehoboth and Laurie-Anne White of Berkley. He also leaves his best friend and mother of his daughter Kathleen Levesque of Taunton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family Church in East Taunton on Tuesday, May 7th at 10 am. Burial will be in the family lot in St. Francis Cemetery in Taunton. Born, raised and educated in Faial, Azores, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Adeline (DoCarmo) Duarte. She was employed as a housekeeper at the former Country Haven Nursing Home in Norton for fifteen years. Mrs. Morais enjoyed gardening, cooking, and spending time with her grandchildren. She leaves a daughter, Mary Gracia and her husband Bruce of Taunton; three stepsons, Manuel Morais and his wife Virginia of Somerville, Herbert Morais and his wife Jorgina of Brockton, and Joseph Morais and his wife Margaret of Cambridge; two stepdaughters, Constance Lowe of Cambridge and Odette Mamory of GA; twelve grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. TAUNTON – Roque “Rocky” Teves Freitas, husband of Aurelina Ramos (Medeiros) Freitas, died at Marian Manor on May 3, 2013. He was 89. Born in Flores, Azores, he was the son of the late Manuel T. and Ermelinda (Freitas) Teves. Educated in the Azores, Mr. Freitas served in the Portuguese Army during WW II before moving to Canada in 1964. A resident of the Taunton area since 1970, Mr. Freitas was employed by the former Bridgewater Foundry for several years. He later worked for Swank, Inc., retiring in 1986. A violinist, Rocky played in local Portuguese folk music ensembles in Taunton and surrounding areas. He was a communicant of St. Anthony Church. In addition to his wife of Taunton, Mr. Freitas leaves a son, Antonio M. Freitas and his wife Shirley of North Port, FL; a daughter, Tina Maria Dutra and her husband Dana of Berkley; a brother, Jose Luis Teves of Flores, Azores; five grandchildren, Anthony, Adam and Samantha Freitas, and Thompson and Arlina Copley; and several nieces and nephews. (Belanger) Boucher. He was born 82 years ago in Raynham, the son of the late Donat and Yvonne (Poirier) Boucher. He was educated in Taunton and was a graduate of Fitchburg State College. Maurice had been a Carver resident for the past 4 years. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed in Shipping and Receiving for Shaw’s Supermarket in Ashland for 10 years. He was previously employed as a Sales Representative for Snap-On Tools for 20 years. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. He enjoyed cooking for his family and woodcarving. He was a communicant of the former St. Joseph’s Church in Taunton. He leaves: 1 son: David M. Boucher and his wife, Deborah of Edgecomb, Me.; 3 daughters: Paula A. Nichols and her husband, Francis of New Harbor, Me., Karin M. Smith and her husband, Thomas of Wareham, and Deborah J.
